Vor der heutigen auch als „Westfälisches Versailles“ bezeichneten Schlossanlage gab es bereits an dieser Stelle eine mittelalterliche Wasserburg. 1694 erwarb der Fürstbischof von Münster, Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg-Lenhausen, den Besitz und plante, daraus einen repräsentativen Stammsitz zu machen.
Der Bau der heutigen Schlossanlage begann 1703 und dauerte bis etwa 1734. Zunächst wirkte der Barockbaumeister Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius an den Plänen mit; später wurde der westfälische Architekt Johann Conrad Schlaun an der Fertigstellung und Gestaltung beteiligt. Der weitläufige Schlosspark wurde ebenfalls im Barockstil angelegt und später über Jahre erweitert. Schon im 18. Jahrhundert gab es große Gartenachsen, Skulpturen und Wasseranlagen. Später wurde der Park immer wieder umgestaltet.
1833 kam das Schloss durch Heirat an die ungarische Adelsfamilie Esterházy de Galántha. Anfang des 20. Jahrhundert verkaufte Herzog Engelbert Maria von Arenberg das Anwesen. 1959 kaufte das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen Schloss und Teile des Parks. Heute beherbergt das Schloss Teile der Fachhochschule für Finanzen Nordrhein-Westfalen. Teile der Anlage und der Park sind öffentlich zugänglich und können besichtigt werden.

Before the current palace complex, also known as the “Westphalian Versailles”, there was already a medieval moated castle on this site. In 1694, the Prince-Bishop of Münster, Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg-Lenhausen, acquired the property and planned to turn it into a prestigious ancestral seat.
Construction of the present-day palace complex began in 1703 and lasted until around 1734. Initially, the Baroque architect Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius was involved in the plans; later, the Westphalian architect Johann Conrad Schlaun was involved in the completion and design. The extensive palace park was also laid out in the Baroque style and later expanded over the years. As early as the 18th century, there were large garden axes, sculptures, and water features. Later, the park was redesigned again and again. In 1833, the palace came into the possession of the Hungarian noble family Esterházy de Galántha through marriage. At the beginning of the 20th century, Duke Engelbert Maria von Arenberg sold the estate. In 1959, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia purchased the castle and parts of the park. Today, the castle houses parts of the North Rhine-Westphalia University of Applied Sciences for Finance. Parts of the complex and the park are open to the public and can be visited.
