Burg Vischering ist eine münsterländische Wasserburg am nördlichen Rand der nordrhein-westfälischen Stadt Lüdinghausen. Trotz eines fast vollständigen Neubaus im 16. Jahrhundert hat die Burg ihren wehrhaften Charakter weitgehend erhalten. Sie ist eine der ältesten und besterhaltenen Anlagen im Münsterland.
Die Gründung als Trutzburg durch den Bischof von Münster geht auf die zweite Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts zurück. Sie entwickelte sich zum Stammsitz der Familie Droste zu Vischering.

Vischering Castle is a moated castle in the Münsterland region on the northern edge of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Lüdinghausen. Despite being almost completely rebuilt in the 16th century, the castle has largely retained its fortified character. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved complexes in the Münsterland region.
It was founded as a fortified castle by the Bishop of Münster in the second half of the 13th century. It developed into the ancestral seat of the Droste zu Vischering family.

How do you take a photo like this?
To give you a little insight into how a photo like this was created, here are a few basic tips and tricks specifically related to this photo.
Basics

First, you should be aware that a good photo is taken by the photographer themselves. The focus is therefore on composition and creativity. At least when you are starting out, it is advisable to follow the rules of composition. The camera and lens are tools for creating the photo. Technically speaking, a photo is only as good as the tools allow it to be.

If creativity and high quality are important to you, you should say goodbye to fully automatic mode. However, individual automatic functions can be useful. It is better to make some camera settings consciously, so it is also important to use them selectively.

There are only a few basic parameters that affect a photo. These are aperture, exposure time and ISO value. The aperture determines the depth of field in the image. The wider the aperture is open, the less sharp the image will be, and vice versa. However, the aperture should only be closed as far as is absolutely necessary. The exposure time should be short enough to prevent the photo from being blurred. The shorter it is, the more likely it is that movement will be frozen. The ISO value determines how sensitive a sensor is to light. The higher it is, the more sensitive it becomes. (More precisely, the light signal is amplified.) However, this has a disadvantage, because as the ISO value increases, so does the noise.

You should be able to focus correctly on the camera. You don’t necessarily have to focus manually, but you should be able to select the appropriate focus fields yourself. Furthermore, the significance of the focal length and its effect on the photo should be actively selected. For example, a longer focal length results in a compression effect, which has its own image effect. Even when using a zoom lens, it can’t hurt to take a few steps forward or backward.

Of course, this is only a very brief overview. There are other influencing factors and parameters, but these cannot be conveyed in the brevity of this text.
Tips & Tricks
In photography, motion blur refers to the blurring of moving objects resulting from the movement itself. It increases proportionally to the exposure time and the angular velocity of the object relative to the camera. This effect is used in image composition to depict movement. With extremely long exposure times, this causes moving objects to become virtually invisible.

Long exposure photography typically uses exposure times that either reveal the movement of objects or make it impossible to take pictures freehand without blurring. There is no set time for this. Freehand photography is used to achieve certain effects (for example, the panning effect). A tripod is used, for example, for indoor photography in order to achieve the desired sharpness regardless of the exposure time. If the exposure times are not long enough during the day, neutral density filters can be used to extend them.

Reflections are a popular stylistic device in photography. They can be used to make rather boring surfaces more attractive, create symmetry, or produce abstract photos. Reflections occur on water surfaces, glass surfaces, or even on metal. With skillful use of reflections, creative images can be created. Incidentally, you can also take a reflective surface with you: in a bottle of water. Unwanted reflections can be reduced with a polarizing filter, but only if the reflective surface is non-metallic.

Nothing in the background should distract from the main subject. The viewer’s gaze should automatically fall on your subject and not on distracting details behind it. If your gaze “wanders” around the photo, the background is probably too busy. When taking the photo, move slightly to the left or right. Often, distracting elements will disappear immediately. Or open the aperture slightly to blur the background. Or change the perspective by moving lower or higher.

Chromatic aberrations are colored fringes — often magenta or green — at high-contrast edges in a photograph. They are caused by lens-induced refraction of light waves, where colors do not align sharply. They are most visible at sharp transitions such as treetops or architectural features. They occur primarily with inexpensive lenses or in extreme lighting conditions. This can be avoided with high-quality optics, moderate aperture values, and centered subjects. The effects can usually be corrected in post-processing.

Maybe you’re waiting for the “perfect” subject. For better light. For more time. But creativity doesn’t start with perfect conditions — it starts with curiosity. With the courage to look. With the decision to get started today.

The light in the morning tells different stories than the light in the evening. Shadows paint patterns on walls. Raindrops transform into tiny universes when viewed in macro. An ordinary street becomes a stage when you observe it patiently.

You don’t need the most expensive equipment. You need your eye. Ask yourself:

  • What do I overlook every day?
  • How does this moment feel?
  • What happens when I get closer — or further away?

Allow yourself to experiment. Play with perspectives. Crouch down. Take pictures against the light. Deliberately crop something out. Break the rules — after you know them. Not every picture has to be perfect. Every picture can be a step.

Creativity comes from doing. So get going. Capture what moves you. Show your view of the world — because no one else sees it the way you do.

Your camera is not a tool for perfection.
It is a tool for expression.
