Die Marienkapelle ist eng mit dem historischen Rittergut Haus Visbeck verbunden. Das Anwesen selbst wurde 1186 erstmals urkundlich als Villa Visbeck erwähnt und entwickelte sich im Mittelalter zu einem Wehrbau auf zwei Inseln. Ab 1338 gehörte es den Herren von Visbeck, bis das Geschlecht 1540 ausstarb und der Besitz mehrfach wechselte. Die früheste Bezeugung einer Kapelle an diesem Ort datiert auf 1572 – damals handelte es sich um eine holzgebaute Marienkapelle, die zur Burganlage gehörte.
Die heute erhaltene gemauerte Marienkapelle wurde 1747 bis 1749 errichtet und steht etwas abseits der Reste der ursprünglichen Burganlage. Sie wird dem Barockbaumeister Johann Conrad Schlaun zugeschrieben. Bereits am 29. Mai 1747 erhielt die Kapelle das Messprivileg von Papst Benedikt XIV., ein rechtlicher Akt, der den Bau als liturgischen Raum festigte.
Ursprünglich besitzt die Kapelle einen achtseitigen (oktogonalen) Grundriss, ein für barocke Kapellen durchaus typisches, symbolträchtiges Formelement. Der Backsteinbau ruht auf einem umlaufenden Sockel und ist durch Pilaster an den Ecken sowie rechteckige Fenster geprägt.
Im Jahr 1889 wurde ergänzend ein rechteckiger Anbau hinzugefügt, der als Langhaus dient und den ursprünglichen Oktogonbau verlängert.

The St Mary’s Chapel chapel is closely linked to the historic Visbeck manor. The estate itself was first mentioned in documents in 1186 as Villa Visbeck and developed into a fortified building on two islands in the Middle Ages. From 1338, it belonged to the Lords of Visbeck until the family died out in 1540 and the property changed hands several times. The earliest evidence of a chapel at this location dates back to 1572 – at that time, it was a wooden St. Mary’s Chapel that belonged to the castle complex.
The brick chapel of St. Mary that stands today was built between 1747 and 1749 and is located some distance from the remains of the original castle complex. It is attributed to the Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun. On May 29, 1747, the chapel was granted the privilege of holding Mass by Pope Benedict XIV, a legal act that established the building as a liturgical space.
Originally, the chapel had an octagonal floor plan, a symbolic design element typical of Baroque chapels. The brick building rests on a surrounding base and is characterized by pilasters at the corners and rectangular windows. In 1889, a rectangular extension was added, which serves as a nave and extends the original octagonal structure.
