Die Speicherstadt entstand zwischen 1885 und 1927 als größtes zusammenhängendes Lagerhaus-Ensemble der Welt auf über 100.000 Eichen- und Pappelpfählen, um Waren zollfrei zu lagern, was durch die Integration Hamburgs in das deutsche Zollgebiet 1888 erforderlich wurde. Ihre Besonderheit liegt in der einzigartigen Kombination aus roten Backsteinbauten im neugotischen Stil, Wasserstraßen (Fleeten), Brücken und Straßen, die sie zusammen mit dem Kontorhausviertel zu einem maritimen UNESCO-Welterbe macht. Als besondere Gebäude sind das ikonische Wasserschloss und die Museen wie dem Speicherstadtmuseum, dem Kaffeemuseum, dem Gewürzmuseum und dem Deutschen Zollmuseum hervorzuheben.

The Speicherstadt was built between 1885 and 1927 as the world’s largest contiguous warehouse complex on over 100,000 oak and poplar piles to store goods duty-free, which became necessary when Hamburg was integrated into the German customs territory in 1888. Its special feature is the unique combination of red brick buildings in neo-Gothic style, waterways (fleets), bridges, and streets, which, together with the Kontorhaus district, make it a maritime UNESCO World Heritage Site. Noteworthy buildings include the iconic moated castle and museums such as the Speicherstadtmuseum, the Coffee Museum, the Spice Museum, and the German Customs Museum.

How do you take a photo like this?
To give you a little insight into how a photo like this was created, here are a few basic tips and tricks specifically related to this photo.
Basics

First, you should be aware that a good photo is taken by the photographer themselves. The focus is therefore on composition and creativity. At least when you are starting out, it is advisable to follow the rules of composition. The camera and lens are tools for creating the photo. Technically speaking, a photo is only as good as the tools allow it to be.

If creativity and high quality are important to you, you should say goodbye to fully automatic mode. However, individual automatic functions can be useful. It is better to make some camera settings consciously, so it is also important to use them selectively.

There are only a few basic parameters that affect a photo. These are aperture, exposure time and ISO value. The aperture determines the depth of field in the image. The wider the aperture is open, the less sharp the image will be, and vice versa. However, the aperture should only be closed as far as is absolutely necessary. The exposure time should be short enough to prevent the photo from being blurred. The shorter it is, the more likely it is that movement will be frozen. The ISO value determines how sensitive a sensor is to light. The higher it is, the more sensitive it becomes. (More precisely, the light signal is amplified.) However, this has a disadvantage, because as the ISO value increases, so does the noise.

You should be able to focus correctly on the camera. You don’t necessarily have to focus manually, but you should be able to select the appropriate focus fields yourself. Furthermore, the significance of the focal length and its effect on the photo should be actively selected. For example, a longer focal length results in a compression effect, which has its own image effect. Even when using a zoom lens, it can’t hurt to take a few steps forward or backward.

Of course, this is only a very brief overview. There are other influencing factors and parameters, but these cannot be conveyed in the brevity of this text.
Tips & Tricks
In close-up photography, a (small) object is positioned in front of the camera in such a way that it appears very large and detailed in the photograph. This allows very small objects or details to be captured particularly well. A close-up can be taken with a special macro lens, but also with the aid of extension rings or close-up lenses (lens attachments).

Nothing in the background should distract from the main subject. The viewer’s gaze should automatically fall on your subject and not on distracting details behind it. If your gaze “wanders” around the photo, the background is probably too busy. When taking the photo, move slightly to the left or right. Often, distracting elements will disappear immediately. Or open the aperture slightly to blur the background. Or change the perspective by moving lower or higher.

Chromatic aberrations are colored fringes — often magenta or green — at high-contrast edges in a photograph. They are caused by lens-induced refraction of light waves, where colors do not align sharply. They are most visible at sharp transitions such as treetops or architectural features. They occur primarily with inexpensive lenses or in extreme lighting conditions. This can be avoided with high-quality optics, moderate aperture values, and centered subjects. The effects can usually be corrected in post-processing.

The saying “less is more” means showing only what is really important in photography. A good photo does not need many elements. It needs a clear main subject, so decide on a main subject. Instead of showing a lot of the surroundings, get closer to the detail or choose a narrower frame.
Photography, psychology, and psychotherapy are closely linked because images have a direct effect on our emotional experience. The brain processes visual impressions faster than words. Even before we consciously interpret a photo, it activates the limbic system — our center for emotions.
Colors, light, perspective, and facial expressions influence our mood: warm colors have a stimulating effect, cool colors a calming one. A familiar face or a specific place can immediately trigger memories and associated emotions.
At the same time, the way we take photos reflects our inner world. The choice of subject and image composition can reveal unconscious themes. This is used in psychotherapy: photos help to express feelings, activate memories, and reflect self-image. Images thus become a bridge between emotion and language.

Photography is more than just technique — it’s your way of seeing the world.

Maybe you’re waiting for the “perfect” subject. For better light. For more time. But creativity doesn’t start with perfect conditions — it starts with curiosity. With the courage to look. With the decision to get started today.

The light in the morning tells different stories than the light in the evening. Shadows paint patterns on walls. Raindrops transform into tiny universes when viewed in macro. An ordinary street becomes a stage when you observe it patiently.

You don’t need the most expensive equipment. You need your eye. Ask yourself:

  • What do I overlook every day?
  • How does this moment feel?
  • What happens when I get closer — or further away?

Allow yourself to experiment. Play with perspectives. Crouch down. Take pictures against the light. Deliberately crop something out. Break the rules — after you know them. Not every picture has to be perfect. Every picture can be a step.

Creativity comes from doing. So get going. Capture what moves you. Show your view of the world — because no one else sees it the way you do.

Your camera is not a tool for perfection.
It is a tool for expression.
