Der Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord (auch kurz „LaPaNo“ oder „LaPaDu“) ist ein etwa 180 Hektar großer Landschaftspark rund um ein stillgelegtes Hüttenwerk in Duisburg-Meiderich. Das frühere Werk wurde 1902 von August Thyssen als „Aktiengesellschaft für Hüttenbetrieb“ zur Versorgung seiner Siemens-Martin-Stahlwerke in Bruckhausen und Styrum gegründet und am 16. Mai 1903 mit der Anblasung von Hochofen 1 in Betrieb genommen. 1985 wurde der Hochofen 5 nach gerade mal zwölf Jahren Betriebszeit aufgrund von Überkapazitäten auf dem europäischen Stahlmarkt als letzter verbliebender Hochofen stillgelegt. In den 1990er Jahren wurden die Hallen, Gebäude und das Außengelände nach den Plänen der Architekten Peter Latz + Partner umgestaltet. 1994 wurde der Park der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht.

The Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park (also known as “LaPaNo” or “LaPaDu” for short) is a landscape park covering around 180 hectares surrounding a disused steelworks in Duisburg-Meiderich. The former plant was founded in 1902 by August Thyssen as a “joint-stock company for metallurgical operations” to supply his Siemens-Martin steelworks in Bruckhausen and Styrum, and went into operation on May 16, 1903, with the firing up of blast furnace 1. In 1985, blast furnace 5 was shut down after just twelve years of operation due to overcapacity on the European steel market, making it the last remaining blast furnace. In the 1990s, the halls, buildings, and outdoor areas were redesigned according to plans by architects Peter Latz + Partner. In 1994, the park was opened to the public.

How do you take a photo like this?
To give you a little insight into how a photo like this was created, here are a few basic tips and tricks specifically related to this photo.
Basics

First, you should be aware that a good photo is taken by the photographer themselves. The focus is therefore on composition and creativity. At least when you are starting out, it is advisable to follow the rules of composition. The camera and lens are tools for creating the photo. Technically speaking, a photo is only as good as the tools allow it to be.

If creativity and high quality are important to you, you should say goodbye to fully automatic mode. However, individual automatic functions can be useful. It is better to make some camera settings consciously, so it is also important to use them selectively.

There are only a few basic parameters that affect a photo. These are aperture, exposure time and ISO value. The aperture determines the depth of field in the image. The wider the aperture is open, the less sharp the image will be, and vice versa. However, the aperture should only be closed as far as is absolutely necessary. The exposure time should be short enough to prevent the photo from being blurred. The shorter it is, the more likely it is that movement will be frozen. The ISO value determines how sensitive a sensor is to light. The higher it is, the more sensitive it becomes. (More precisely, the light signal is amplified.) However, this has a disadvantage, because as the ISO value increases, so does the noise.

You should be able to focus correctly on the camera. You don’t necessarily have to focus manually, but you should be able to select the appropriate focus fields yourself. Furthermore, the significance of the focal length and its effect on the photo should be actively selected. For example, a longer focal length results in a compression effect, which has its own image effect. Even when using a zoom lens, it can’t hurt to take a few steps forward or backward.

Of course, this is only a very brief overview. There are other influencing factors and parameters, but these cannot be conveyed in the brevity of this text.
Tips & Tricks
Shooting from an elevated angle (high-angle shot) is a technique that provides a better overview but also adds drama. These positions can often be achieved by holding the camera high or shooting from a ladder. Significantly higher positions (for example, from an airplane or with the help of a camera drone) are referred to as a bird’s-eye view.

Abstract photography breaks with the traditional depiction of subjects, shifting the focus away from the recognizable towards form, color, structure, and mood. Instead of clear objects, it shows fragments, distortions, or experimental techniques that make the familiar appear strange. Its core principle is: it’s not about what is photographed, but about how it affects the viewer. Perception is challenged – the image invites interpretation, feeling, and understanding. Typical features include strong contrasts, repeating patterns, light reflections, blur, or extreme close-ups, for example, of rust, glass, or fabrics. The intention is to convey emotions or ideas through visual elements, not through recognizability. Those who photograph abstractly deliberately seek out structures in everyday life – a concrete wall, a puddle, a crumpled piece of paper – and isolate details through tight framing, unusual perspectives, or motion blur. Long exposures, camera pans, and multiple exposures expand the artistic possibilities. Post-processing can intensify, rotate, or mirror colors to deepen the effect. Abstract photography doesn’t follow a rigid set of rules but encourages experimentation. It teaches us to see the world with new eyes — not as a representation, but as an expression of energy, tension, or harmony.

The saying “less is more” means showing only what is really important in photography. A good photo does not need many elements. It needs a clear main subject, so decide on a main subject. Instead of showing a lot of the surroundings, get closer to the detail or choose a narrower frame.
Creativity in photography is particularly important for creating unique and memorable images, and you become creative by trying out unusual perspectives, experimenting, and accepting mistakes as part of the learning process. Creativity can be encouraged by experimenting with perspectives, such as shooting from above or below, as well as by trying out different techniques and lighting, allowing yourself to be guided by new inspiration and challenges without fear of making mistakes.

Photography, psychology, and psychotherapy are closely linked because images have a direct effect on our emotional experience. The brain processes visual impressions faster than words. Even before we consciously interpret a photo, it activates the limbic system — our center for emotions.
Colors, light, perspective, and facial expressions influence our mood: warm colors have a stimulating effect, cool colors a calming one. A familiar face or a specific place can immediately trigger memories and associated emotions.
At the same time, the way we take photos reflects our inner world. The choice of subject and image composition can reveal unconscious themes. This is used in psychotherapy: photos help to express feelings, activate memories, and reflect self-image. Images thus become a bridge between emotion and language.

Maybe you’re waiting for the “perfect” subject. For better light. For more time. But creativity doesn’t start with perfect conditions — it starts with curiosity. With the courage to look. With the decision to get started today.

The light in the morning tells different stories than the light in the evening. Shadows paint patterns on walls. Raindrops transform into tiny universes when viewed in macro. An ordinary street becomes a stage when you observe it patiently.

You don’t need the most expensive equipment. You need your eye. Ask yourself:

  • What do I overlook every day?
  • How does this moment feel?
  • What happens when I get closer — or further away?

Allow yourself to experiment. Play with perspectives. Crouch down. Take pictures against the light. Deliberately crop something out. Break the rules — after you know them. Not every picture has to be perfect. Every picture can be a step.

Creativity comes from doing. So get going. Capture what moves you. Show your view of the world — because no one else sees it the way you do.

Your camera is not a tool for perfection.
It is a tool for expression.
