In Dülmen haben zwei traditionsreiche Volksfeste besondere Bedeutung: die Dreifaltigkeitskirmes und die Viktorkirmes.
Die Dreifaltigkeitskirmes findet rund um das kirchliche Fest der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit im Frühsommer statt. Ihre Ursprünge liegen in religiösen Feierlichkeiten und Prozessionen, aus denen sich im Laufe der Zeit ein weltliches Volksfest entwickelte. Mit Marktständen, Fahrgeschäften und Musik wurde sie zu einem festen Bestandteil des städtischen Lebens.
Die Viktorkirmes im Herbst steht in Verbindung mit dem Patron der Stadt, dem heiligen Viktor. Auch sie hat kirchliche Wurzeln und geht auf frühere Kirchweih- und Patronatsfeste zurück. Im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert wuchsen beide Kirmessen zu bedeutenden Jahrmärkten heran.
Heute prägen moderne Fahrattraktionen, traditionelle Buden und ein buntes Rahmenprogramm beide Feste. Sie verbinden Glaubenstradition, Brauchtum und gemeinschaftliches Feiern und gehören fest zur Identität Dülmens.

Two traditional folk festivals are particularly important in Dülmen: the Trinity Fair and the Victor Fair.
The Trinity Fair takes place around the church festival of the Holy Trinity in early summer. Its origins lie in religious celebrations and processions, which over time developed into a secular folk festival. With market stalls, fairground rides, and music, it became an integral part of urban life.
The Viktorkirmes in autumn is associated with the patron saint of the city, Saint Victor. It also has ecclesiastical roots and dates back to earlier church consecration and patron saint festivals. In the 19th and 20th centuries, both fairs grew into important annual markets.
Today, modern rides, traditional stalls, and a colorful supporting program characterize both festivals. They combine religious tradition, customs, and communal celebration and are an integral part of Dülmen’s identity.

How do you take a photo like this?
To give you a little insight into how a photo like this was created, here are a few basic tips and tricks specifically related to this photo.
Basics

First, you should be aware that a good photo is taken by the photographer themselves. The focus is therefore on composition and creativity. At least when you are starting out, it is advisable to follow the rules of composition. The camera and lens are tools for creating the photo. Technically speaking, a photo is only as good as the tools allow it to be.

If creativity and high quality are important to you, you should say goodbye to fully automatic mode. However, individual automatic functions can be useful. It is better to make some camera settings consciously, so it is also important to use them selectively.

There are only a few basic parameters that affect a photo. These are aperture, exposure time and ISO value. The aperture determines the depth of field in the image. The wider the aperture is open, the less sharp the image will be, and vice versa. However, the aperture should only be closed as far as is absolutely necessary. The exposure time should be short enough to prevent the photo from being blurred. The shorter it is, the more likely it is that movement will be frozen. The ISO value determines how sensitive a sensor is to light. The higher it is, the more sensitive it becomes. (More precisely, the light signal is amplified.) However, this has a disadvantage, because as the ISO value increases, so does the noise.

You should be able to focus correctly on the camera. You don’t necessarily have to focus manually, but you should be able to select the appropriate focus fields yourself. Furthermore, the significance of the focal length and its effect on the photo should be actively selected. For example, a longer focal length results in a compression effect, which has its own image effect. Even when using a zoom lens, it can’t hurt to take a few steps forward or backward.

Of course, this is only a very brief overview. There are other influencing factors and parameters, but these cannot be conveyed in the brevity of this text.
Tips & Tricks
A light trail is created by light sources that move through the image during exposure. This is achieved using a long exposure. A well-known example is night shots in which vehicles move through the image. This also applies to shots of fireworks or lightning. The creative use of light sources is employed in light painting, in which figures are drawn with the help of different light sources.

The night has its peculiarities. Some of the camera’s automatic functions no longer work or do not work correctly, especially the autofocus. Different light sources have different color temperatures, exposure times become longer, and higher ISO values lead to more noticeable noise. However, these challenges also present opportunities: light trails or light painting are possible, illuminated objects stand out from their surroundings, and a flashlight can be used to illuminate specific objects. Using the available light opens up many possibilities and offers scope for creative ideas.

The saying “less is more” means showing only what is really important in photography. A good photo does not need many elements. It needs a clear main subject, so decide on a main subject. Instead of showing a lot of the surroundings, get closer to the detail or choose a narrower frame.
Photography, psychology, and psychotherapy are closely linked because images have a direct effect on our emotional experience. The brain processes visual impressions faster than words. Even before we consciously interpret a photo, it activates the limbic system — our center for emotions.
Colors, light, perspective, and facial expressions influence our mood: warm colors have a stimulating effect, cool colors a calming one. A familiar face or a specific place can immediately trigger memories and associated emotions.
At the same time, the way we take photos reflects our inner world. The choice of subject and image composition can reveal unconscious themes. This is used in psychotherapy: photos help to express feelings, activate memories, and reflect self-image. Images thus become a bridge between emotion and language.

Photography is more than just technique — it’s your way of seeing the world.

Maybe you’re waiting for the “perfect” subject. For better light. For more time. But creativity doesn’t start with perfect conditions — it starts with curiosity. With the courage to look. With the decision to get started today.

The light in the morning tells different stories than the light in the evening. Shadows paint patterns on walls. Raindrops transform into tiny universes when viewed in macro. An ordinary street becomes a stage when you observe it patiently.

You don’t need the most expensive equipment. You need your eye. Ask yourself:

  • What do I overlook every day?
  • How does this moment feel?
  • What happens when I get closer — or further away?

Allow yourself to experiment. Play with perspectives. Crouch down. Take pictures against the light. Deliberately crop something out. Break the rules — after you know them. Not every picture has to be perfect. Every picture can be a step.

Creativity comes from doing. So get going. Capture what moves you. Show your view of the world — because no one else sees it the way you do.

Your camera is not a tool for perfection.
It is a tool for expression.
