Especially with social media you have to pay attention to the terms of use. These sometimes do not correspond to the license conditions listed here. (See CC BY-SA licenses and social media.) Please check this before use in the respective medium.

The license conditions must also be respected when using so-called generative artificial intelligence (AI). Images created on the basis of this image are processed images or derivatives within the meaning of the license.

Of course, a free license is no carte blanche for use. In particular, there are restrictions not based on the license, for example to the personality rights of the author (Copyright law of Germany, §§ 12 to 14 of the German Copyright Act). This is especially true for the required attribution and the use of the image. It is expressly not allowed to give the impression through the use of the image, that the author supports the work, in which the image is used, or whose rights holders in any way.

Even though a wiki offers a wide range of possibilities, some changes are possible but not permitted. The creator of the image has made it available here under the specific license mentioned. The three components — image file, license, and filename (title) — are inextricably linked. Always keep in mind that images are also used outside the Wikimedia Commons ecosystem. In those contexts, attribution specifically refers to this exact location and this exact image file here.

• If you make changes to the image and want to make the modified image available to others here, upload the result under a new name and credit yourself as the editor — even for very minor changes. The templates Derivative and Extract are also available for this purpose. In addition, the user should make minor corrections only to the source file they have on hand. The source is — as a rule — a RAW file. Editing a JPEG file always results in an undesirable loss of quality.
• As an alternative to the specified license, only compatible licenses are permitted. Otherwise, any other form of licensing is reserved exclusively for the copyright holder.
• When making changes to the filename, please always keep in mind the world outside of Wikimedia Commons. Anyone who enters a link expects the correct page with the correct image to appear. Anything else leads to confusion. A reference to the file versions is considered insufficient and impractical.

It goes without saying that using the Crop Tool will not overwrite this original file. In accordance with the license, the resulting cropped image will have its user categories removed, any labels like “Quality Image” removed, the name of the person who created the cropped image added, and this original file cited as the source.

Two additional notes:

• File metadata (EXIF/IPTC/XMP) must not be removed or altered (protection of information necessary for the enforcement of rights, §95c UrhG).
• The author expressly disavows any images based on his photos (derivative works) that have been altered — even minimally — by third parties and on which only his name is listed as the author.

The title (or, alternatively, the filename) is part of the license’s required information and should therefore not be changed. If any of the information is incorrect, the author would appreciate being notified.
