In Dülmen befand sich der alte jüdische Friedhof am Lüdinghauser Tor – ein Begräbnisplatz, der von jüdischen Gemeindemitgliedern seit dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert genutzt wurde und bis 1937 bestand. Dort wurden die Toten der jüdischen Gemeinde beigesetzt, bevor später ein neuer Friedhof am Kapellenweg angelegt wurde. Im Jahr 1937 wurde der alte Friedhof unter dem Druck der Nationalsozialisten und gegen den Willen der jüdischen Gemeinde aufgelöst und die Fläche veräußert. Die Grabsteine der dort Bestatteten wurden auf den damals neueren jüdischen Friedhof am Kapellenweg verbracht, wobei Exhumierungen innerhalb der engen Frist nicht stattfanden. Nach der Einebnung des Friedhofs erhielt die freigewordene Fläche den Namen Hindenburgplatz, benannt nach dem ehemaligen Reichspräsidenten Paul von Hindenburg. Dieser Platz entstand direkt auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Begräbnisplatzes. Teile der noch nicht entfernten Gräber wurden überdeckt; die örtliche NSDAP verwendete ein Hakenkreuz-Blumenbeet zur Bepflanzung des Platzes, was symbolisch die Schändung eines heiligen Ortes darstellte. Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde der Name Hindenburgplatz nicht mehr offiziell weitergeführt. Die frühere Fläche des Friedhofs wurde später überbaut oder als Grünfläche genutzt, und erst in den Jahrzehnten danach erinnerte man sich wieder an die frühere Nutzung und die jüdische Gemeinschaft. Heute erinnert unter anderem ein Mahnmal am alten Friedhofsort, der ehemalige jüdische Friedhof vor dem Lüdinghauser Tor, an die jüdischen Bürgerinnen und Bürger Dülmens und an ihre Geschichte. In Dülmen, the old Jewish cemetery was located at Lüdinghausen Gate – a burial site that had been used by Jewish community members since the early 17th century and existed until 1937. The dead of the Jewish community were buried there before a new cemetery was later established on Kapellenweg. In 1937, under pressure from the National Socialists and against the will of the Jewish community, the old cemetery was closed and the land sold. The gravestones of those buried there were moved to the then newer Jewish cemetery on Kapellenweg, but no exhumations took place within the tight deadline. After the cemetery was leveled, the vacated area was given the name Hindenburgplatz, named after the former Reich President Paul von Hindenburg. This square was created directly on the site of the former burial ground. Parts of the graves that had not yet been removed were covered; the local NSDAP used a swastika flower bed to plant the square, which symbolically represented the desecration of a sacred place. After the end of World War II, the name Hindenburgplatz was no longer officially used. The former cemetery area was later built over or used as green space, and it was not until decades later that people began to remember its former use and the Jewish community. Today, a memorial at the site of the old cemetery, the former Jewish cemetery outside the Lüdinghausen Gate gate, commemorates the Jewish citizens of Dülmen and their history.

The three components — image file, license, and filename (title) — are inextricably linked. Always keep in mind that images are also used outside the Wikimedia Commons ecosystem. In those contexts, attribution specifically refers to this exact location and this exact image file here.
- If you make changes to the image and want to make the modified image available to others here, upload the result under a new name and credit yourself as the editor — even for very minor changes.
